Star world 2 talos principle11/17/2023 Storytelling is also done through time capsules large, almost holographic images (which are different each time) found around many of the worlds you will explore. When you consider the gravity of your actions here from the perspective of the protagonist, it is truly amazing. The sequence that follows ascending to the top of the tower is one of the most memorable moments in video game history. The conflict between these two characters leads to an inevitable choice do you do as ELOHIM says and simply solve all main puzzles and then supposedly achieve eternal life? Or do you ascend the tower against ELOHIM’s will? Or do you find more secrets and unlock the more discreet third ending? Milton occasionally suggests exploring it, albeit he doesn’t push too hard for this since he doesn’t seem to care about anything either way. Do not let it tempt you, he says, which probably tempts you further. Communication with ELOHIM is one way (him speaking to you) while communication with Milton is two way, with selected dialogue responses within the computer interface.ĮLOHIM warns you about Milton, and more importantly against exploring the tower in the main hub which seems to reach into the clouds. Milton questions you, gauges certain responses only to point out logical fallacies and conflicts in them, tries to make you doubt ELOHIM in this place. Milton, your library is lacking, to say the least.ĮLOHIM, which means God in Hebrew, acts almost as a father figure to you and seems benevolent, while Milton seems manipulative. Some may wonder why so little information is on these computers, if their purpose (as is revealed later on) is to preserve human history. When a computer displays this, it means “Milton” has something to say. But it seems it was made too sentient if there is such a thing, as it has seemingly developed a personality. It is an AI designed to sort and categorize information, and respond to conflicting information. On some of these computers you may contact the Milton Library Assistant, hereby referred to as Milton. He talks about the world you are in, how it was made for you and how it contains secrets, how there have been others before you, how before this world there was chaos but in here there is purpose.īut he/it isn’t the only one you make contact with. Seek me in my temple if you are worthy.”ĮLOHIM watches your progress closely, encourages faith and your success. Hear now my voice and know that I am your maker, and I am called ELOHIM. You are risen from the dust, and you walk in my garden. A voice that identifies itself as ELOHIM materializes out of nowhere. The game starts with the player character, a robot which resembles a human, awakening in a strange, ancient looking place.

Brilliance definition physics11/17/2023 Oppenheimer’s old Communist sympathies were dredged up and his clearance was revoked a mere 32 hours before it was set to expire. His security clearance was revoked in 1954 in a hearing during the Second Red Scare. “What we don’t understand, we explain to each other.” Beginning in 1947, Oppenheimer directed the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, where he convened great scientists. Lawrence named his second son after Robert.Īfter the war Oppenheimer became an advisor of the Atomic Energy Commission, lobbying for international arms control. At Berkeley, he became good friends with Ernest Lawrence, one of the world’s top experimental physicists and the inventor of the cyclotron. Oppenheimer received his doctorate in 1927 and accepted professorships at the University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology. Oppenheimer had the good fortune to be in Europe during a pivotal time in the world of physics, as European physicists were then developing the groundbreaking theory of quantum mechanics. At Cavendish, Oppenheimer realized that his talent was for theoretical, not experimental, physics, and he accepted an invitation from Max Born, director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Göttingen, to study with him in Germany. Thomson, who had been awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics for detecting the electron, agreed to take on Oppenheimer as a student. In 1925, Oppenheimer began his graduate work in physics at Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England. Although he majored in chemistry, Oppenheimer eventually realized his true passion was the study of physics. He graduated in three years, excelling in a wide variety of subjects. Oppenheimer enrolled at Harvard in September 1922. This experience restored Oppenheimer’s health and instilled a deep love for the desert high country. From there, he took five- or six-day horseback trips in the wilderness. Robert stayed at a dude ranch 25 miles northeast of Santa Fe with high school teacher Herbert Smith as a companion and mentor. After being bedridden for months, his parents arranged for him to spend the summer of 1922 in New Mexico, a haven for health-seekers. He graduated as valedictorian of his high school class in 1921, but fell ill with a near-fatal case of dysentery and was forced to postpone enrolling at Harvard. His correspondence with the New York Mineralogical Club was so advanced that the Society invited him to deliver a lecture-not realizing that Robert was a twelve-year-old boy. His academic prowess was apparent very early on, and by the age of 10, Oppenheimer was studying minerals, physics, and chemistry. Adler also founded the Ethical Culture School, where Oppenheimer enrolled in September 1911. The progressive society placed an emphasis on social justice, civic responsibility, and secular humanism. Oppenheimer’s family was part of the Ethical Culture Society, an outgrowth of American Reform Judaism founded and led at the time by Dr. Oppenheimer was married to a botanist, Kitty. As director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, Oppenheimer proved to be an extraordinary choice. Less than three years after Groves selected Oppenheimer to direct weapons development, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. Throughout the previous year he had been doing research on fast neutrons, calculating how much material might be needed for a bomb and how efficient it might be.Īlthough Oppenheimer had little managerial experience and some troublesome past associations with Communist causes, General Leslie Groves recognized his exceptional scientific brilliance. He is often known as the “father of the atomic bomb.”īy the time the Manhattan Project was launched in the fall of 1942, Oppenheimer was already considered an exceptional theoretical physicist and had become deeply involved in exploring the possibility of an atomic bomb. During the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer was director of the Los Alamos Laboratory and responsible for the research and design of an atomic bomb. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was an American theoretical physicist.

Guru dev namo11/16/2023 When you’re chanting this word, you want to think of coming from Anahata Chakra, the fourth Chakra. So by it chanting ONG correctly, striking the tongue at the top of the mouth, you’re pulling the energy forward into the front of the brain. It’s a very emotion-based state of mind.Īnd in Kundalini Yoga you’re trying to raise your vibration. So the back of the brain is the more reptilian brain where we’re reactive and in survival mode. It’s also going to bring the energy towards the frontal brain. From the outside of the body, you can most easily find it at the space right between and above your eyebrows, which is your third eye center.Īnd when you hold your tongue to the roof of your mouth as you pronounce the first syllable ONG, it’s going to activate pituitary gland, which is exactly what you want to do in Kundalini Yoga. When you chant this sound, visualize energy at your third eye center.ĭoing it in that way stimulates the hypothalamus, the pineal gland, and then the pituitary gland, which sit at the very center of your brain. ONG means infinite creative energy and you want to say it, this is really important with the tongue hitting the roof of the mouth, the upper palate of the mouth. I’m going to break down the mantra bit by bit so that you can truly tune in and allow the divine flow of energy to begin within you as you chant. When translated from Sanskrit, it means “ I bow to the Creative Wisdom, I bow to the Divine Teacher within.” The complete Adi mantra is ong namo guru dev namo and is used to tune in to higher consciousness at the beginning of every Kundalini yoga class. What is the meaning of Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo? A primal vibration.Īnd when we begin our practice by chanting the complete Adi Mantra three times, we are quite literally tuning in like a tuning fork to the primal vibration of the infinite creative consciousness that drives all of existence. The rhythmic pattern is a vibration that matches the same rhythmic patterns of the mantras. Sound is not something that you can hold with your hand but when you push air forcefully enough, it moves in a rhythmic pattern that our ears hear as sound. Atoms buzz and swirl so fast that our eyes perceive them as solid matter when, in fact, they are just tiny buzzing particles.Īnd sound vibrates too. Energy itself is a sort of vibration and we can see it (and measure) it even at the atomic level. They are sort of like a primal vibration, at the very core of our existence.Įverything in this world has a vibration. It is this state of connectedness that we recognize as Divine Truth, self-knowledge, higher consciousness, or WHATEVER term that describes meditative bliss. It’s like a mantra meditation that connects the mind, body, and spirit as one. The Adi Mantra sets the tone for your yoga practice. So I want to break it down for you here so that you know exactly what you’re chanting the Adi mantra at the beginning of each Kundalini yoga session. It’s an incredibly powerful mantra that helps us connect with and refine the divine flow of infinite creative energy, both in ourselves and the reality around us.īut I was doing Kundalini Yoga for years before anyone ever really explained what this meant or how to do it properly! Whether you’re just beginning your Kundalini yoga practice or you’ve been a Kundalini practitioner for many years, you’ll notice that every class begins by chanting the Adi mantra, ong namo guru dev namo.

Tragically hip gord downie11/16/2023 Mike Downie’s bonds to the school run deep. Sinclair’s father, Duncan, was dean of Medicine. “I went to every show that I could – at the Manor, at the Commodore – all the Kingston shows,” Mike says. For Mike, going to Hip shows was a way to blow off steam from his studies. In Gord’s case, the lecture hall took a back seat to the stage. Mike, a year ahead, was a self-described “meds keener” in life sciences. We walked past Queen’s every day to get to KCVI.”Īfter high school, Gord enrolled in film studies at Queen’s. Of course, being in Kingston put the band in Queen’s orbit. They took the name from a TV comedy skit. Eventually, they came together to form the Tragically Hip in 1984. Gord Sinclair and Rob Baker’s band was called Rick and the Rodents. Gord Downie was in a KCVI band called the Slinks. “We came into Kingston and, all of sudden, hockey was out and music became everything. When the boys were teens, the Downies moved into Kingston to a house on King Street West and Gord’s life changed. He and Gord shared a bedroom when they were growing up in Amherstview, with a toboggan hill outside their back door and a frozen swamp for playing hockey. No one has had a better seat for that story than Mike Downie himself. And in telling their story, it’s also telling the story of this country and why this band meant so much to so many Canadians.” “This is the full telling of the Tragically Hip. “A documentary about the Hip’s definitive story has never been done,” Mike Downie says. Though many films have been made of the Tragically Hip’s concerts and tours, no one has ever told the full story. “And we follow that career path all the way through until the very end, past that last concert and up to today and the various legacy projects.” “We are telling the story of the five members of the band, right from the beginning, and their Kingston roots when they were performing as a couple of different high school bands that slowly morphed into what becomes the Tragically Hip,” Mike Downie says. It’s a nice feeling to be back on campus. Funny how the years go by and, going back there, it seems not much has changed. The series will air on Amazon Prime in the fall of 2024. He’s making a four-part documentary about the Hip – from Gord’s childhood and high school years at Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute (KCVI), through to the Hip’s national and international stardom and the searing final concert at Kingston’s K-Rock Centre (now Leon’s Centre) in August 2016, 14 months before Gord Downie’s death from brain cancer at age 53. Nearly 40 years later, Mike Downie still wants people to see his kid brother’s band. They were just a bunch of guys playing at a Queen’s pub, but I was already a devotee. My brother’s band is playing and they’re great,” says Mike Downie, a documentary filmmaker and Gord’s older brother. “I meet people today and they say to me, ‘I remember you telling me, “Meet me at Alfie’s. Gord Downie, Artsci’87, and fellow Queen’s students Gord Sinclair, Artsci’86, LLD’16, and Rob Baker, BFA’86, LLD’16, along with two other Kingstonians, Paul Langlois, LLD’16, and Johnny Fay, LLD’16, were the soundtrack of your university years.Įven after success took the band to Toronto and eventually around the world, there was never any doubt that the Tragically Hip was a Canadian band. Maybe you saw them at the Clark Hall Pub, or soaked in sweat from a packed dance floor on a Saturday night at the Manor. If you were in Kingston anytime from the mid-1980s to the early ’90s, there was only one “Queen’s band” and that was Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip. They never wore kilts, didn’t play at football games, and if ever they marched, it was most assuredly to the beat of their own drummer.

Skull and bones movie11/16/2023 The first is that the sole unarguable constant of human history is our inability to accept that life is an essentially meaningless sequence of random occurrences. There are two principal reasons why such beliefs are gaining currency. The idea that the world is run by secretive, ruthless and unaccountable elites is becoming more and more popular, both on the fringes (countless internet sites burble about the pernicious influence of one group or another) and in the mainstream - what have the recent protests against the World Trade Organisation in Seattle and Prague been, if not a demonstration of this? This is a shame, and not just for the usual reasons that ill-focused movies are a shame. The Skulls spends the rest of its span trying to figure out whether it is a matinee thriller, teen romance or action romp, and the climactic scenes are as baffling as they are preposterous, something like Beverly Hills 90210 rewritten by John Woo, and not half as much fun as that might sound. Unfortunately, either or both director Cohen or writer John Pogue - who claims membership of a Yale secret society - lose their grip shortly after the opening half -hour. Had The Skulls continued in this vein, musing on the conflicts that arose from Luke trying to maintain his new life alongside his old, it might have made an interesting human drama, as well as a provocative meditation on class division on campuses in notionally egalitarian America. Those chosen for Skull And Bones are reputed to be welcomed aboard with a slightly less grandiose $15,000 and a grandfather clock. When Luke is selected by The Skulls, he is rewarded with a Breitling watch, $20,000 and a vintage sports car. We are also told that "the CIA was created within its walls" - and it is axiomatic that the CIA's second world war-era forerunner, the Office of Strategic Services, was stuffed to the gunwales with Yale graduates. The film's opening titles inform us that "three American presidents" are alumni of this ostensibly fictional club - back in the real world William Taft, George Bush and George W Bush are all alleged Bonesmen, as members are known. The Skulls in The Skulls are transparently modelled on the Yale University society Skull And Bones. The tension on which the film attempts to perch its plot is created when Luke is extended membership of a secret society of the more sinister sort: The Skulls. It comprises him and two fellow students at a posh American college: a girl he doesn't realise he loves (Chloe, played by Leslie Bibb) and his best friend and room-mate (Will, played by Hill Harper). In Rob Cohen's initially intriguing, eventually annoying and finally completely baffling new film The Skulls, his central protagonist, Luke McNamara, played by Joshua Jackson - the bloke off Dawson's Creek you don't want to smack in the mouth with a railway sleeper - is, at the outset, a member of just such a workaday cabal. For most of us, these societies are known as Me And My Mates, and they general pose little threat to humanity at large. We are all members of secret societies: close-knit groups whose rules of admission seem arbitrary or bizarre to outsiders, who express their solidarity with peculiar rituals and phrases, whose members look out for each other's interests and keep each other's secrets.

Broken scaphoid11/16/2023 More severe arthritis can occur when the scaphoid does not heal giving significant pain. Very mild arthritis is often seen on X-rays following scaphoid fractures, but symptoms from this are unusual. AVN has a strong association with smoking.Īrthritis – The term arthritis is used when the normal joint lining (articular cartilage) becomes damaged or worn.Īrticular cartilage is the smooth, white tissue lining the ends of bones where they form joints, allowing the bones to glide over each other with very little friction. The scaphoid usually does not heal, and surgery may be recommended when this happens. Surgery is then usually recommended, although a small number of patients still have long term symptoms following surgery for non-union of the scaphoid.Īvascular Necrosis – Avascular necrosis or AVN is the name given when the blood supply to the scaphoid bone fails. However, pain and loss of function are common if the non-union is unstable. Some non-unions are stable, and although the bone fails to heal, scar tissue still holds the bone ends together, with a good result. Non-union – Unfortunately, the risk of the fracture not healing is around 10-15%. Passing a screw across the fracture turns the injury from an unstable injury into a stable injury, and this gives it a better chance of healing.Īre there any complications of this injury? A wire is passed down the bone across the fracture and a special screw passed over the wire to fix the 2 parts of the bone together. This is sometimes done through a wound of just a few mm, and sometimes a longer scar over the bone is needed. – Surgical Repair (Internal fixation) of the scaphoid. In some circumstances, surgeons may recommend internal fixation of the bone. – Plaster cast / splint. The vast majority of fractures are stable and only require treatment in a cast. If the scaphoid is unstable, it can still be treated in a cast, but the chances of it not healing are higher than if the fracture is stable. There are 2 options for treating these fractures. You should try to stop smoking if you have a scaphoid fracture, in order to allow the best possible chance of healing. Therefore fractures furthest away from the blood supply are less likely to heal and therefore need surgical intervention.ģ) Smoking. There is a strong association between smoking and non-union (failure of healing) of the scaphoid. The near end of the scaphoid therefore has a poor blood supply and a fracture can easily cut it off preventing healing. Blood, which is essential for healing, is supplied from the far end of the scaphoid, and runs back down the bone towards the wrist. A cyst may form at the fracture site as the joint fluid can promote breakdown of bone – the fracture is then unlikely to heal and surgery is often recommended.Ģ) Blood supply to the bone. There are several factors which influence the speed of the bone healing:ġ) Fracture displacement – in an unstable injury the normal lubricating wrist joint fluid can circulate between the gap between the bone ends. the wrist may still be a bit stiff and sore for anything up to to a year.Īround 10%-15% do not heal i.e. Once healed, many scaphoid fractures continue to give nuisance symptoms i.e. This process can take anything from a few weeks up to around 4 or 5 months. The majority ( around 85% – 90%) of scaphoid fractures heal when immobilised in a plaster cast. The wrist pain and swelling usually settle within the first 6-12 weeks. When the scaphoid bone breaks, there is usually pain over the thumb side of the wrist, but often the whole wrist will be involved and may swell up. The bone still moves as one unit.Ģ) Unstable injury. The broken parts of the bone do not move together – a gap between the bone ends which do not line up perfectly is often seen on X-ray. When the scaphoid bone breaks, it can be in one of two ways:ġ) Stable injury. Everything is still in the right place in a stable scaphoid fracture, and the bone simply has a crack going through it which can be difficult to see on Xray.
